Sen-Ryo, Mitsukoshi BGC

In the heart of Bonifacio Global City’s bustling dining scene, where new restaurants pop up faster than you can say itadakimasu, Sen-Ryo has emerged as one of the top destinations for Japanese food lovers. Located in the sleek and modern Mitsukoshi Mall, Sen-Ryo offers an authentic, elevated sushi experience that’s a notch above your average Japanese restaurant in Manila. Known for its precision, freshness, and refined presentation, this Japanese gem has quickly captured the attention of discerning diners, food critics, and anyone who appreciates the artistry of sushi.

If you’re used to conveyor belt sushi chains or all-you-can-eat promos, Sen-Ryo will feel like stepping into another league — a league where each piece of sushi is treated like a work of art, each grain of rice is perfectly seasoned, and every slice of fish is chosen with meticulous care. With a menu that honors Japanese tradition while embracing modern flavors, Sen-Ryo offers a dining experience that’s equal parts elegant, satisfying, and memorable.

Whether you’re planning a special date night, entertaining business guests, or simply rewarding yourself after a long week, Sen-Ryo delivers not just food but a full sensory journey — from ambiance and service to flavors that linger in your memory long after the last bite.

From the moment you step into Sen-Ryo at Mitsukoshi, you’re greeted with an atmosphere that strikes a balance between sophistication and warmth. The interiors are a masterclass in modern Japanese design: light wood accents, muted tones, clean lines, and subtle lighting that flatters both your dining companions and your Instagram feed.

The seating layout offers a mix of options — from the sushi bar (perfect for watching the chefs at work) to intimate booth seating ideal for small gatherings. Unlike some Japanese restaurants that can feel overly formal, Sen-Ryo maintains a relaxed yet refined vibe, making it equally suitable for casual lunches and celebratory dinners.

One of the highlights of the ambiance is the open kitchen concept at the sushi bar. Watching the chefs slice sashimi with surgical precision and assemble nigiri with practiced elegance adds a touch of theater to the meal. The overall atmosphere is quiet enough for conversation but alive with the gentle hum of activity — a sign of a well-run, high-quality restaurant.

If ambiance sets the stage, the food is where Sen-Ryo truly shines. Every dish I tried showcased fresh, premium ingredients prepared with meticulous attention to detail. This is not a place where the menu overwhelms with endless pages — instead, Sen-Ryo focuses on doing fewer things exceptionally well.

The sushi and sashimi offerings are the stars, with fish sourced both locally and internationally. Each piece of nigiri arrives as a small masterpiece, with rice that’s perfectly seasoned and warm enough to enhance the delicate flavors of the fish. The texture, temperature, and balance are spot-on — qualities you don’t often encounter outside of Japan.

Beyond sushi, Sen-Ryo also offers a selection of tempura, grilled dishes, and donburi bowls, each executed with the same level of care. Portions are generous enough to satisfy but restrained enough to keep the focus on quality over quantity.

If you’re new to Sen-Ryo, the omakase sets are an excellent introduction to the restaurant’s strengths. They allow you to experience a curated selection of dishes, highlighting the chef’s craftsmanship and seasonal specialties.

Unagi Nigiri

If you’re planning your first visit to Sen-Ryo, trust me — you’ll want to try at least a few of their standout dishes. I’ve listed my personal top two favorites, but honestly, every item here earns its place on the table (and in your stomach). I’ve been back more times than I can count, and yes, I’ve even brought the French bae along a few times — because some dining experiences are just too good not to share.

  • Cheese Croquette – My undisputed number one. Golden on the outside, creamy and cheesy on the inside — this is comfort food disguised as fine dining. One bite and you’ll understand why I’m obsessed.
  • Smoked Duck – My top two pick and a total flavor bomb. Tender slices of duck with a delicate smokiness that pairs beautifully with their house sauces.
  • Salmon Sashimi – Fresh, buttery, and cut to perfection. This is salmon in its purest, most indulgent form.
  • Unagi Nigiri – Sweet, savory, and melt-in-your-mouth tender — the perfect bite of eel over perfectly seasoned rice.
  • Seared Shrimp with Black Pepper Nigiri – A subtle kick from the black pepper enhances the natural sweetness of the shrimp.
  • Seared Salmon with Pollock Roe Nigiri – That smoky sear plus the briny pop of pollock roe? Sushi magic.
  • Salmon Cheese Tempura Roll – Crispy tempura coating, rich salmon, and oozy cheese — a playful yet decadent roll that hits all the textures and flavors.

Service at Sen-Ryo is where the experience crosses from “excellent” to “exceptional.” From the moment you enter, the staff treats you like an honored guest. Hosts are quick to welcome you and guide you to your table, while servers are attentive without being intrusive.

Our server not only knew the menu inside out but also provided thoughtful recommendations based on our preferences. Empty plates never lingered for long, water glasses were discreetly refilled, and timing between courses was just right — allowing each dish to be enjoyed without feeling rushed.

The sushi chefs themselves also interact warmly with diners at the bar, answering questions about ingredients and even offering tips on the best way to enjoy certain dishes. This level of personal connection makes the dining experience feel more intimate and memorable.

Let’s address the sushi-shaped elephant in the room — Sen-Ryo is not cheap. But when you consider the quality of the ingredients, the skill of the chefs, and the overall experience, the price feels justified.

Expect to spend around PHP 3,000.00 – PHP 4,500.00 for two people if you’re ordering a mix of sushi, sashimi, and a couple of specialty items. Lunch sets and donburi bowls are slightly more affordable, making them a good option for first-timers who want to sample the food without committing to a full splurge.

While Sen-Ryo is definitely a premium dining destination, it’s one that delivers excellent value for money — every peso you spend translates into an elevated culinary experience.

  • Go for Omakase – It’s the best way to sample a variety of premium dishes without second-guessing your choices.
  • Ask About Seasonal Specials – Sen-Ryo often offers limited-time items that aren’t on the main menu.

Sen-Ryo is conveniently located inside Mitsukoshi Mall at BGC, making it easy to find whether you’re a local or a visiting foodie. Mitsukoshi itself is a destination, with its Japanese-inspired architecture and curated retail shops, so arriving early to browse before your reservation can enhance the experience.

For drivers, the mall offers secure basement parking with reasonable rates, though spots can fill up during peak hours. Commuters will find multiple jeepney and bus stops nearby, and ride-hailing services like Grab have no trouble locating the entrance.

The location is also pedestrian-friendly, surrounded by other dining and shopping spots, making Sen-Ryo an ideal stop during a BGC food crawl.

Based on ambiance, food, service, and price, Sen-Ryo earns high marks across the board. It’s the kind of restaurant that understands the value of details — from the temperature of the rice to the precision of knife work and the thoughtful pacing of each course. While it’s not a casual, everyday dining spot for most, it’s perfect for occasions when you want to treat yourself or impress someone special.

If you appreciate authentic Japanese flavors, refined presentation, and attentive service, Sen-Ryo at Mitsukoshi BGC will not disappoint. It’s a dining experience that justifies its price tag and leaves you eager for a return visit.
