5 Reasons To Start Using A VPN When Traveling

To put it simply,  a VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a software that helps enhance your online privacy and security. A VPN allows you to create a secure connection to another network over the Internet. The data is encrypted as it travels between the client and your VPN provider’s servers. This means that outsiders cannot observe your activities and that it is much more difficult to track your internet usage.

Here Are 5 Solid Reasons To Start Using A VPN When Traveling

1. Hides Your IP Address To Provide Privacy.

A VPN connection creates a secure tunnel for internet browsing. It encrypts all the data being transferred between your device and the page you want to access, making it almost impossible to be deciphered.

Moreover, a VPN connection also hides your IP. This means hackers, or your ISP (internet service provider), can’t see your identity online.

Once you connect to a VPN through the VPN software, the overall connection on your device is encrypted including the internet browsers, apps, torrents.

2. Gives the Ability To Safely Connect to Public Wi-Fi.

One of the biggest benefits of using a VPN is it gives you a secure way to connect to public networks without worrying about third-party snoopers.

If you travel a lot and often connect to airport and hotel networks, then you should be using a VPN service.

Reason why Connecting to Public Networks is Risky:

  • Data Phishing, refers to a hacker stealing your data. If a hacker has access to a router you’re connected to, the sniffing comes easy for them.
  • Fake Wi-Fi networks – One common way for hackers to steal your information is by targeting a popular place (like coffee shops, airports, etc) and create a Wi-Fi connection with  that place’s name. You have no way of telling if the network is fake. So you might find yourself enjoying your favorite coffee, deciding to check your email and end up by connecting to a fake network and get your identity stolen.
  • Auto-connecting – One way we make our life easier is by setting up our devices to auto-connect to Wi-fi networks we often use. The thing is, a hacker is able to duplicate a Wi-Fi connection. So if somebody is after your data, they can duplicate your Wi-Fi connection and your device will auto connect to the fake network.

Keep in mind that a hacker having access to your internet connection is not something to overlook. They don’t only see your internet history, but they can also get their hands on your accounts, passwords, credit card data.

By using a VPN service, you assure a connection that’s safe to use even from your favorite coffee shop.

3. Access Geo-Restricted Content.

Regional restriction can also pose a problem if you use to travel a lot. If you are from the Philippines, for example, and you travel to China, you might find that some of the websites such as Facebook or Twitter, you usually access from the Philippines are blocked for Chinese users. In this case, using a VPN will give you the freedom to access the websites you want.

4. Save Money Shopping Online.

VPN services can help you save a lot of money on things like rental cars, airline tickets, or flash sales. Most websites that you visit will usually track you and look at everything you do or buy. Most of these sites will then charge you more, particularly those that have fluctuating prices such as travel websites. With a VPN your location will be blocked or broadcasted from a less wealthy country. As a result, you will get cheaper prices on hotel rooms, rental cars, or flights because these websites have specific prices for different locations.

5. Works As A Remote Control.

Through a VPN connection, you can access your home network while traveling. Meaning you will be able to connect to the internet as being on the same LAN (local area network) as home, giving you the ability to share local files.

What Is A Good Free VPN?

A good free VPN is kind of an oxymoron. Why, you ask? Well, most people use a VPN for the enhanced privacy and security that they offer. If you are browsing with a free VPN, you have to wonder how they are getting the money?

The answer may be a little unsettling, however it is the same for many free online services. A general principle is that if you are using something online for free, you are probably the product, not the customer. Just like other free services such as Google and Facebook, most free VPNs make their money by gathering data on you and selling it.

Why You Should Invest On A Paid VPN?

  • They offer genuine protection for your private data online.
  • They have topnotch network security.
  • They do not impose bandwidth or speed limits.
  • They give you access to more server locations.
  • They offer a host of other features for a better experience.
  • They offer 24/7 customer support.

My Recommendation

In principle, I do not trust things that are free of charge like public Wi-Fi hotspots. In fact, I hardly ever trust companies/products in general unless I tried them myself – reason why I don’t join “blogging” activities/events for the purpose of promoting things in exchange for tokens or perks. Whenever I go out, there are opportunities of free internet access like in coffee shops, airports or bus terminals. Because of my interest in online security, I was looking for a solution that would allow me to connect to public networks but will not threaten my privacy. I’ve tried most free VPNs and a few paid ones until I came across NordVPN. I am absolutely satisfied with the wide and growing range of servers worldwide. All NordVPN applications are available for multiple platforms, it has a user-friendly interface and contains useful features like “CyberSec” which blocks annoying ads as well as malware, phishing and other threats. They also have a strict “no logs” policy meaning, they do not log any of their users’ activity, nor the IP addresses or timestamps unlike most VPNs that I’ve used. This is why I highly recommend NordVPN.
