Muteppou Ramen in Osaka, Japan | Foodventure

I came to know about Muteppou Ramen when my landlady informed me that there’s a well-known Ramen house just below my Airbnb. That piqued my interest as a Ramen fan (I could literally live off Ramen for the rest of my life)! I went right to this Ramen place when I unpacked (which was a little late) and oh, boy! It didn’t let me down!

Muteppou’s specialty is Tonkotsu Ramen.

Tonkotsu (豚骨 in Japanese), or “pork bones” means the soup broth is prepared by boiling pork bones in water for a significant amount of time, up to eight hours, and the broth is typically cloudy in appearance.

Some restaurants allow customers to select the level of firmness for the noodles, just like here in Muteppou.

Ordering at Muteppou is quite tricky as the vending machine is in Japanese but don’t worry, the staff were very friendly and accommodating. In fact, they patiently assisted me in placing my order. Mind you, it was a busy night but they stayed with me until I’ve got my food tickets. I was then asked to take a seat at their waiting area (again, it was a busy night).

Tonkotsu Ramen (¥780)

I like Tonkotsu ramen but this ramen takes you to another level. Instead of white pork broth, Kotteri ramen is rich, thick (it was so thick that it was almost like having ramen in gravy) and dark and you can taste a slight bitterness from the roasted pork broth. The broth coats the thick ramen. As you can see, they were also very very generous with the chashu (pork slices) that were so tender it almost melts in your mouth.

You get to choose the hardness of your noodles, the thickness of the broth, and the amount of spring onions. I chose hard, medium and medium, and wouldn’t have it any other way.

I felt my picture didn’t do justice but the serving was actually quite big.

Gyoza (¥420), Bottled Beer (¥500)

Gyoza was also delicious. Not the best but it’s definitely good.

Service at Muteppou Ramen

The staff that assisted me was very helpful and friendly. In fact, were able to make small talk (how was I, where I came from, have I been to Osaka, etc). The turn around time was also prompt, my food arrived within 7 minutes of getting my seat.

Things To Remember

  • On normal business hours, the queue is quite long. I went here at around 9:00 PM, there is still a line but it’s not as long compared to when I passed by at 12:00 PM and 6-7:00 PM.
  • They don’t accept credit cards. They use vending machines be sure to have coins with you.

Overall

I’ve tried ramen from restaurants both in Tokyo and Osaka but my experience at Muteppou Ramen is different. Good different. I enjoyed my food a lot that I came back the next day.
