El Meson de Gonzalo Restaurant Review

We were wandering around Plaza Mayor in Salamaca, Spain, when we were hungry and decided to ask locals for recommendations for the best restaurant around. This is where they told us to go.

El Meson de Gonzalo in Salamanca, Spain

At the time of my visit there, it was lunch time, and I wasn’t surprised that the El Meson was quite packed. We were welcomed by the host and were led to a cozy corner with a table good for 6 people. The whole place is clean, and you can tell that it was well-maintained.

Salamanca was my first stop in Spain and I’m entirely new to authentic Spanish food, so I have nothing to compare with.

Paletilla de cordero lechal (IGP Castilla y León) con patata panadera (27.50 €)

It was savory and definitely my favorite out of the things we ordered. My photo didn’t do justice at the presentation but the portion was quite big – it was enough for four person. Not to mention, the meat was tender and very tasty.

Ensalada de burrata, tomates y albahaca (14 €)

I liked it a lot. That’s all I’m going to say.

Sashimi de atún rojo con ajoblanco y emulsión de tomate (24 €)

I’m used to eating sashimi with wasabi and soy sauce, so when the tuna was served with cheese, garlic, and tomato sauce, I had no idea what to expect. I was in for a surprise. A wonderful surprise.

The service was outstanding. The staff member assigned to us spoke English well, and he helped us choose our food. He was also enthusiastic in making recommendations. We only waited a few minutes before our orders were served.

El Meson de Gonzalo is a must-see for everyone visiting Salamanca. It is by far one of the best restaurants I have ever been at, with fantastic food, excellent service, and an amazing atmosphere. We will be going back.
