That ‘Fashion Vortex’ Called My Mom’s Photo Album

First of all, I would like to greet all the super moms out there a Happy Mothers’ Day! Especially my mother – this strong and beautiful woman has always been the inspiration for my desire to explore the world and to experience what life has to offer. Being a traveler herself she taught me how to be appreciate, practical, and indepenent.

Where’s the best place to get inspiration when it comes to fashion?

For me, it would be in my mom’s photo album. I don’t claim to be stylish but the few times that I had to ‘dress to impress’ – the inspiration for my clothing was from her photographs. I was going through her album (or should I say Lookbook) and found these amazing pictures of her wearing the hippest clothes from the ’70 to the ’80s.

Fashion trends are always recycled after a period of time. Every era has its unique offering and becomes a phenomenon that stays for long, only to vanish the scene suddenly but it doesn’t end there. It’s sure to make a comeback sooner or later.

Here are some of my mom’s #OOTD:

The Classic White Top

White Tee Underneath her Jacket | Little White dress

Tube Top + High-Waisted Pants

3/4 Top or Long Sleeves + High-Waisted Jeans

Plain Tee + High-Waisted Jeans

Halter Neck Dresses

How I wish I have a keen eye for fashion just like my mom – unfortunately, I don’t. Most of what’s in my closet are jeans, shorts, and more shorts. I remember when I was 23 years old, I would still ask my mom for tips. “Maaa, unsa akong suoton?” (Muuum, what shall I wear) which she’d happily raid my closet then mix and match things. She’s the best! 💕

Not exactly an #OOTD but I would love to recreate this photograph someday.

What outfits have you found in your mother’s closet? Which ones are your favorite? I would love to know by commenting down below!

  2. I also love scrolling through old pics, it’s nice to see how the fashion is evolved. I love vintage. – Amalia

  3. I admire the fashion in the 80s – 90s. Well, I am biased because those were my growing up years. Then, you dont have to show some skin to be fashionable. Hope the young generation should appreciate this kind of fashion style.

  4. Looks like your mom was more a child of the 70s and early 80s with those tube tops and high waisted pants. I loved the fashion of the 80s personally but that was my Gen X generation, so I am loving the return of some of the fashion trends cause I may actually be able to look cool. Ok probably not but it is fun to dress in that style.

  5. I agree! It is wonderful to go to retrieve photo albums and often find incredible and perfect looks in the same looks even for today!

  6. Did you enhance the quality after digitalizing? The quality looks amazing. And of course she is Gorgeous!!!

  7. First of all, happy mother’s day to your amazing mom! She definitely has an eye for fashion and I’m so into her style. I love my mom’s clothes during the 90s!

  8. I have to say your mom looks amazing. It’s my first time seeing hippie clothes from the ’70 to the ’80s, and it is really refreshing. I for one, lack an eye for fashion and I’m looking for some tips to improve my wardrobe.

  9. Belated Happy Mother’s Day to your Mom! While I was reading your post, I also remember my mom who is a fashionista by heart at the age of 59. And just like you, whenever I need to wear something new for a party, I would borrow her clothes too. And by the looks of it, the fashion in the 80’s is slowly being adapted today! The rompers, halters, tube tops.. High waist pants. Cool moms that we have ✋

  10. My mom and I have different fashion tastes. She hates fashion and goes with anything from Sears. I go with more wear shapes and flow.

  11. Your mom clearly made a fashion statement back then! It’s amazing how she preserved these photos, so good to look through her memories. She seems to be a carefree person too. Happy Mother’s Day! 🙂

  12. She was a FASHION ICON. I love all of her pictures. She was the main character in her life and knew it!!
