Ooma, a Japanese Fusion Cuisine at SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City

While I generally do not care for fusion cuisine, which is often done poorly, I can occasionally appreciate a good example. Rather than being tempted by fusion dishes, I prefer to go for authentic local cooking. An exception to this was Ooma, where I found the Japanese cuisine to be done quite well.

Ambiance

The first time a friend and I stumbled upon Ooma Japanese Rice Bar, I liked the ambiance – casual and fun, and at the same time big enough, which meant that tables aren’t packed too closely to each other giving patrons plenty of privacy. By the way, I’ve already been here several times before the lock downs.

Food

The menu had a wide selection of meat and fish dishes, and there is definitely something for everyone. The staff were helpful in explaining the menu and making recommendations.

Here are my favorites:

Half-baked chocolate lava cake (185 PHP)

As we ate our dinners, I spied around at the meals being delivered to the other patrons and think I detected a trend – very generous portion sizes especially their udon.

I tried more of what’s in their menu but the food featured above are some of what I enjoyed the most. Others are: Tori Udon (395 PHP), Salmon Skin Aburi Maki (265 PHP) and Ebi and Kani Aburi Maki (265 PHP).

Service

It’s a hit or miss. I mostly had negative experience in regards to service; when the restaurant wasn’t even busy, with only a few tables occupied, it still took a remarkably long time for my food to arrive. The Aburi Maki arrived swiftly, but I waited over fifteen minutes for the Oyako Don, until I had to ask about it (when I asked the waiter, it seemed like they had missed out on it); similarly, the processing of my bill was extremely delayed, considering the few number of customers. The food quality was satisfactory, however, I felt like the service wasn’t worth the extra charge added to the bill.

Overall

If you can look pass their service and focus on the food, Ooma is worth trying if you haven’t yet.

  1. Mukhang maganda at masarap. Dito puro Intsik ang nagpapandaar ng mga Japanese restaurant…peke yata. Mayroon lang 2 o 3 totoong Japanese sa Roma
