16 Side Hustles to Help Boost Your Travel Fund

Travels are supposed to be fun and relaxing, but it’s hard to unwind when you’re constantly stressing about how you’re going to pay for all of it. Whether it’s a road trip, or travel across the globe. Even though we have day jobs sometimes it’s hard to make money on one income source alone.

Travels are supposed to be fun and relaxing, but it’s hard to unwind when you’re constantly stressing about how you’re going to pay for all of it. Whether it’s a road trip, or travel across the globe. Even though we have day jobs sometimes it’s hard to make money on one income source alone.

Side hustles are a great way to fill your free time with productive work that you (hopefully) enjoy. Not only does a it provide an injection of extra cash flow to your bank account, it can also help to boost overall life satisfaction.

Other benefits of side hustles include:

  • Gives you the freedom to decide how much you want to work and earn
  • Does not require a large financial investment upfront
  • Most of it don’t require formal education or a specialized skill in order to be profitable

Below are the side hustles that I’ve tried and have proven to work.

USE YOUR SKILLS AND TALENTS

Be a Music Instructor
Do you know how to play a musical instrument? You could start a part-time music teaching business. I know how to play the drums and about 3 years ago I had plenty of spare time so I used it to my advantage. Search for music studios online and inquire if they’re looking for instructors. Most studios have Facebook business pages or you may try walking around your city to find one. I was earning P650 ($12.66) per session and I usually have 3 students per day.

Be a Local Tour Guide
If you live in an area that is popular with tourists, you can either start your own guided tour, or become a tour guide at an already established tour company. The best tour guides are those who have both lived in the area for a long time and know a lot about its history. I charge per person and per hour and I was earning P3849 ($75) per day.

Be an Extra in the Movies or TV
You don’t have to audition for parts; you’re only hired based on your looks and sometimes experience. One time, a Soap Opera was filming in our school and a Talent Scout approached and offered me the job. My first gig being an extra was just to walk in the background a few times and I got paid P500 ($9.74). If you’re lucky enough to get a script, you could earn at least P1000 ($19.49).

Be a Tutor
Tutoring is a wonderful way to earn money and hone teaching skills. As a tutor, you will have the advantage of working with individual students or small groups, which will allow you to customize your lessons to your students’ pace, interests, and learning style. I used to teach basic Math to grade schoolers and I was earning P1000 ($19.49) per hour.

Be a Club DJ
I’ve only spin three times but it was hella fun (and I got a good hella cash… and booze). You don’t usually have to provide the equipment since the club has it already furnished. All you have to do is show up and entertain the crowd. The goal of the club DJ is to keep the dance floor packed with patrons, while clearing it periodically so that bar sales will increase. How much? P3000-P4000 ( $58.46-77.95) per night.

Be a Baker
Baking is fun, but it’s also tough. Creating a cake requires the creativity of an artist, the precision of a chemist and the cool head of a polar bear. I was around twenty four when our city offered free baking classes so I signed up. With my newly acquired skill, I was able to put up a business (but it was only short time). Most of what I offered were cupcakes both basic and custom made. The tricky part was how you’re going to price them right. I charged P100 ($1.95) for basic standard-sized cupcake and my minimum order is 50 pieces.

MAKE MONEY ONLINE

Answer Surveys
You can make money by offering brands your opinion for their consumer research. Maybe not a lot of money, but it could add up.

  • Survey Junkie – Popular online survey site with more than 3 million members.
  • Swagbucks (free $5 bonus; earn up to $35 a survey)
  • Prize Rebel – Earn $10-12 an hour doing surveys or completing other tasks. Just avoid the low-paying ones.
  • Opinion Outpost – Cash out at just $5 via PayPal or Amazon gift cards. Each survey enters you into a $10,000 quarterly drawing.
  • CashCrate – Get a $1 bonus just for signing up!

Search Engine Evaluation
Projects usually involve examining and analyzing advertising content, images, and text and then reporting in writing on specific aspects of the ads. If you’re interested in trying this you may check out KarmaHub, Lionbridge, Appen and iSoftStone. The pay is pretty good, generally more than $13 per hour.

Freelance Writing
It is a form of project-based writing for someone else as a self-employed individual. You do it as non-employee of a person who hired you because you work to deliver the written text you agreed upon. The pay depends on the project and your expertise. You may check out Upwork, Fiverr and WritersLabs for freelance writing jobs.

Affiliate Marketing
It is the process of earning commissions for marketing another person’s or company’s products. How does it work? If your readers/traffic buys anything by clicking your affiliate link, you will get a commission. This commission varies from $1 to $10,000 depending on what product you are promoting. The companies that I’ve worked with in my previous blogs were ShareASale, Commission Junction, Awin, and Amazon Affiliate Program.

Teach Language Online
Looking for a flexible lifestyle, whilst designing your own lessons and helping students make rapid progress? Apply to teach a language online. All you need is a webcam, a noise-cancelling USB headset, and high-speed internet. Though it is an in-demand job but the competition is steep, and acceptance is not guaranteed. Companies like DaDa, pays up to $15-25 per hour depending on their TPR (Total Physical Response) performance in their interview. So make sure you prepare and practice so you can nail it.

Create an Online Course
Udemy is an impressive online education platform where students can connect with teachers from all around the world in any subject. You can create your own course around a topic you’re an expert in and set your own tuition rate. In Udemy, I teach Stock Market for beginners and I’m earning $16.99 per student. Not bad, right?

SELL STUFF ONLINE

Sell Custom Designed T-Shirts
Have you ever read a funny slogan or an inspirational quote and thought, “I wish I had a T-shirt that said that!?” I would say most of us (including myself). I used to design and sell T-shirts as a hobby so I made an online shop, “Strip Tees” at Multiply.Com (the website shutdown it’s operation last 2013). Starting can be a bit pricey but it’s totally worth every buck. Nowadays, there are a number of websites where you can advertise your product such as TeeSpring and SellMyTees (bronze plan). Or you can sell them on Facebook Marketplace.

Sell Your Second Hand Items
Do you have second hand items that are in good condition? May be electronics, mobiles, toys, furniture, books, handbags, etc. Don’t know what to do with them? Why not sell them online! It doesn’t require a large investment to begin with, and you can probably find what you need at home and declutter your room while you’re at it. You may post ads at Craigslist or eBay

Sell Your Art and Craft
Do you have a knack for creating handmade gifts or decor? Consider opening an online shop at Etsy, where you can earn nice profits from your hobby. Another good website is Zazzle. It is a custom-manufacturing company that produces unique products from artwork and personal materials provided by the client. So keep your creative Juice flowing and start earning.

Sell Your Photographs
If you’re good at Photography or Video editing and Publishing then Shutterstock can literally make you rich. How does it work? Every time your photo is downloaded by a customer, you’ll make money. How much you make depends on the subscription that was used for each download. You can also earn 20% commissions by referring more customers.

A few things to remember about side hustles are: 1. it shouldn’t interfere with your day job, 2. it should generate profit, and 3. you enjoy it. Every side hustle has the potential to teach you something unique. It’s just a matter of finding one that fits your goals, schedule and your preferences. I hope these suggestions have helped you pick your new gig in order to save for that much awaited trip. You got this!

  2. Oh this is exciting! Never thought that there are ways to earn online nowadays. I would love to make a few cash while travelling, I mean who wouldn’t. However, I would mainly want to focus on my vacation so I really am not looking into getting a full time side hustle. Would consider looking at the options listed here. Such a great read, thank you.
