*** Hey hunnies! I received an email from one of our friends, Brenda Medina asking about how I managed to overcome depression. It is a sensitive subject and lots of people do not feel comfortable opening up straight away. But that’s exactly the point of this post – a friendly talk about failures, committing mistakes, and how not to succumb to such negative thoughts. On my recent travel, I managed to sit down, reflect, and was able to write about it. Yes, I always carry a notebook with me whenever I travel so I can write things whenever I get inspired. Mental strength involves more than just drive or willpower; it is a collection of attributes that allow a person to persevere through difficult circumstances and emerge without losing confidence by establishing healthy habits and choosing to devote their time and energy to self-improvement.

Here are 10 Habits of a Mentally Strong Person.

1. They Embrace Failure

Missteps and roadblocks are inevitable but mentally strong people, see disappointment and failures as ultimately an opportunity to learn, pivot, and go after their goals with a new perspective. It’s okay to fail sometimes it’s precisely the fact that you learn more from failure than from all the successes you might have. By not being perfect at what you do from the start, you can notice all those things you do incorrectly, you can learn from your mistakes and you can improve yourself.

2. But They Don’t Dwell On Their Mistakes

They move on but not forget about the mistakes they made. By keeping their mistakes at a safe distance, yet still handy enough to refer to, they can adapt and adjust for future success.

3. They Don’t Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over

They accept full responsibility for their mistakes and commit to doing better next time.

4. They Know They Can’t Please Everyone

They don’t worry about pleasing other people. They are more focused on impressing themselves. Becoming a people-pleaser will only cause you to lose sight of your values, and your self-worth will become dependent on other people’s opinions of you.

5. They Are Self-Confident

Being comfortable in your skin, not getting embarrassed, and being self-aware are all great characteristics for someone to have. Mentally strong people trust their intuition. And are not afraid to speak straight about it. They also know when to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

6. They’re Persistent in the Pursuit of Their Goals

They conquer fears and uses them to motivate action. They don’t give up easily, but they can let go of things, endeavors, or relationships that don’t work for them, and move on. Remember that even J.K. Rowling was once an unknown writer and she is now a self-made billionaire woman.

7. They are Resilient

“Bouncing back” is what they do when faced with disappointment, defeat, and failure, but instead of wallowing or letting things keep them down, they get back up and continue with their lives. No matter how hard life may get, or how difficult might the situations turn, they always put bits of courage together and fight back.

8. They Don’t Expect Overnight Success

The road to success is a marathon, not a sprint – but it doesn’t always seem that way. It’s tons of hard work, takes a lot of time and dedication, and sometimes is impossible to manage but in the process, you will discover strength you’ve never known, the peace you didn’t know was available, and a completely new level of self-acceptance. And it can be extremely rewarding.

9. They Forgive Even When it’s Hard To

It is natural to make mistakes and mentally strong people forgive themselves and others. They don’t hold grudges because they know, in doing so, can affect their mental strength. Forgiveness leads to greater psychological well-being, healthier relationships, less stress, anxiety, and hostility; and a stronger immune system.

10. They Celebrate Others’ Success and Happiness

Mentally strong people aren’t jealous. We tend to be envious of what other people have/achieve when we aren’t sure about what we want for ourselves. But remember, everyone’s journey is unique. Your sister, cousin, or that coworker is working toward their personal goals, and that you have different ones. Ask yourself what would make you the proudest and bring you the most peace when you look back at the end of your life.

Mental strength is just about approaching the game from the right perspective. So go out there and challenge yourself daily with a skill you have not mastered so you can improve your confidence for when times get rough. Believe you can, and you will.

  1. I certainly don’t do all of these things but you are so right! a mentally strong person is able to do these things. I always get down on myself for failures but Im learning to accept them as a teaching lesson rather than a failure

  2. It makes me so happy I’m at least doing a few of the points on this list already. You’re spot on with these being habits of mentally strong people, especially the parts about not dwelling on failures and not being jealous of others.

  3. Love this. I think all too often we focus on being perfect when in reality “perfect” isn’t achievable and isn’t the sign of a strong person. Thanks for the reminder!

  4. It’s a nice piece of writing. I think when we stop pleasing everyone then we naturally become more confident and safe our head from unnecessary stress.
