From the aesthetic benefits to mental perks, there’s a slew of benefits specific to running that together make a pretty strong case for anyone to consider becoming a runner.

Running is addicting! I’ve been doing it since 2010 and had my first full marathon (26.22 miles) back in 2015. I run whenever I could even when I’m on a trip. The beach? Yes! The trail? Absolutely! A foreign city? Well, unless there’s a running event! 😀

Here are the 5 reasons why you should join a fun run.

IMPROVES HEALTH

Regular running and jogging is a good way to improve your health and fitness. It provides a great cardiovascular workout and makes the heart stronger. It increases the capacity of the blood circulation and of the respiratory system. This is essential for maintaining good fitness. It also speeds up the digestive system and can help to relieve digestive problems. Many people who live a sedentary lifestyle develop digestive problems that can be improved with a healthier diet and some regular exercise.

LOSE WEIGHT

It is one of the best forms of exercises for losing or maintaining a consistent weight. It burns about 100 calories per mile for a 150-pound person. Because running also builds muscle mass, your resting metabolism will increase, which means that you’ll burn more calories at rest. If you combine running with a healthy diet, you’ll definitely notice a difference in the way you look and feel.

BOOST CONFIDENCE

Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has a huge effect on self confidence. If you’re out of shape, you’ll feel insecure, unattractive, and less energetic. By running, you improve your physical appearance, energize yourself, and accomplish something positive. Having the discipline to run or jog not only makes you feel better, it creates positive momentum that you can build on the rest of the day.

RELIEVE STRESS

Running can be the perfect distraction when you’re dealing with a difficult situation. And the endorphins your body releases during running can give your mood a natural boost.

A SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT

An accomplishment, even as simple as finishing a good 5 kilometre run is something that you’ve done to the best of your ability, that has taken a certain level of skill, determination or hard work to complete. Not only does it make you ‘feel good’ but also gives you the motivation to reach your goals or aim for bigger goals. 10 KM, anyone?

Have you tried joining in a fun run or how was the experience? Or if you haven’t, would you consider joining one? I’d like to know by commenting below.

  1. Great post. Honestly the last is the first reason for me. I need to run for my mental health, otherwise I get rungry haha like when people get hangry when they’re overly hungry… Also, I admit that I get a little hangry too at times haha

  2. How I envy you, I honestly haven’t tried joining a marathon yet. I did however, tried mountain running once however that was just for the fun of it. I was once acquainted with Jaymie Pizarro (she’s the mom of one of my students) who in someway motivated me to join a marathon. However, it didn’t materialize.

What marathon do you suggest btw?

Looking forward to a future article from you about “How to prepare for a marathon”.

Thanks for sharing another informative article Polly. You rock!

  3. Ahhhhhhh, running: my worse foe! I would love to join a color run but I don’t like running. I like yoga and Tae Kwon Do more but I could try running.

  4. Fun Run used to be part of my life because of our annual school activities. I miss it a lot (though I’m more in the outdoor these past few days). Couldn’t agree more with your mentioned reasons!

  5. This is great! I’ve joined a few fun runs with my kids and it was such fun! The kids loved getting their runners numbers and getting bananas at the end, of all the things. LOL! This post makes me want to sign up for another! Thanks!

  7. Yes — I’m with you on this activity. Healthy for you (and for kids, if you drag them along and model healthy living to them).
