Safety Tips for Running in the Dark


I usually run in the evening, first  because of convenience and not necessarily preference. It’s practically impossible to run in the morning (except for weekends) when there is work and other responsibilities to attend to. Second, there is way less humidity than there is in the morning and that’s what makes a run feel difficult for me. I can’t deal with too much heat. Finicky much? 😛

Running in daylight is always a safer choice but for those who have to run at night or in the early morning, here are some tips to keep you safe while you run.

1. Run on the LEFT side of the road – If you’re running on roads, make sure you run against the traffic. It’s easier to avoid cars if you can see them coming.

2. Choose a well-lit route and populated area – Oncoming cars see you better, and you’ll always be able to see the road and avoid potential hazard. Running on deserted area you set yourself up as an easy target for someone to attack you. So it is best to stick to busier roads and be safe.

3. Be seen.  Being seen at night or during low-light conditions is crucial to your safety so it is best to wear reflective materials. Make sure other runners and vehicles can see you.

Running must haves: Reflective vest, safety light (preferably clip-on), and a headlight.


4. No headphones – Bummer right? When running in the dark, you need to rely on all your senses. With your headphones on you can’t hear oncoming cars, cyclists yelling to move, dogs, or any other potential threat.

5. Carry identification cards and your cell phone (make sure it’s charged) – In case of emergency

6. Inform others – It is important to let someone know your plan (especially if you’re flying solo). I always tell my mom/dad about my route and time just in case something happens.
